Quilting is my passion. I make quilts, teach patchwork and quilting in South Yorkshire UK and am the co founder of 3 Quilt Groups in Yorkshire. In October 2011, Chris, a dear friend and founder member of Foxy Quilters, lost her battle with cancer. Weeks before she died she asked me to promise to finish her quilts for her. Some were finished shortly after her death but the rest have now been completed and were presented to her husband yesterday. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is Neil, her husband with the bed quilt that Chris was making for them. It was a mystery quilt, Chris had done all the piecing, layered and tacked it so I just had to quilt and bind it.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwSeeo5r8LS2Tvh2O8EJGNNDieaRl919ZFyKtFUkpmZ4cA8aSLdr6wQoAfIFmSx37hOLujpS46I7yfHqcslVvOpm85bslam6f2ahctMWtG4I8ZdIaZEPSyNxT2pa4unVPQh6bZrEvb-IaJ/s1600/P1030453.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" eea="true" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwSeeo5r8LS2Tvh2O8EJGNNDieaRl919ZFyKtFUkpmZ4cA8aSLdr6wQoAfIFmSx37hOLujpS46I7yfHqcslVvOpm85bslam6f2ahctMWtG4I8ZdIaZEPSyNxT2pa4unVPQh6bZrEvb-IaJ/s320/P1030453.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Chris had bought her fabrics to make a Civil War quilt in patriotic colours as she has an American granddaughter. Sadly she had only completed one block before she died. As the class progressed, I cut fabric for her blocks each week and members of the class made up enough blocks to make quilts for her grandchildren.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This was a very emotional surprise for her husband, sister and brother in law and I am sure they will be treasured.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Over the last few weeks I have been working on my cheddar bowtie blocks. These were a <a href="http://www.quiltville.com/">Bonnie Hunter</a> leader and ender challenge from last year! I decided I didn't like the traditional settings of the block and a visit to google images came up with this alternative setting which I really like. Also , by adding in the plain squares it makes your quilt twice as big! The blocks are 3 inches finished size and the top measures 50 inches square so far.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFumYO-BpCjXjhMO6LTdOinTbJsgOoPBLeVOiV6JcAYVcAorSHy4Nr2GcgolN3ODln_QR4Ok0WRHWA9eWSKYjc1Upi9d9fCti0Lmj5Q1ZzGWddKprSA32OmEHNG6hqMTcgXtKyf1wwlZUi/s1600/P1030422-001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="218" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFumYO-BpCjXjhMO6LTdOinTbJsgOoPBLeVOiV6JcAYVcAorSHy4Nr2GcgolN3ODln_QR4Ok0WRHWA9eWSKYjc1Upi9d9fCti0Lmj5Q1ZzGWddKprSA32OmEHNG6hqMTcgXtKyf1wwlZUi/s320/P1030422-001.JPG" tea="true" width="320" /></a></div>
Here is a closer view. It will finish with a narrow dark green border and then a border of four patches, currently being made as leaders and enders, in true Bonnie style.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
At the moment I am quilting my Geometric Modern Sampler quilt which I will share soon. I love quilting my own quilts, revisiting each block as I quilt it, but it takes so much longer than I think!<br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Yesterday I visited the Knitting and Stitching Show in Harrogate. I think I have been attending for around 20 years! Although the focus is not on quilting there are usually lots of interesting exhibitions and this year was no exception. This summer has been a difficult one for me due to the deteriorating health of my mother. However I did manage a short visit to Festival of Quilts in Birmingham England. As usual the quilts were the highlight for me! I concentrated on the modern and scrappy quilts with piecing being my main focus.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/112904041332656714928/AQuiltersJournal05?authkey=Gv1sRgCIby4_z9pPvuswE#5785551509869052882" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivTmCsJFK7_rN5JEqa-5QoN-y6hnUesWwNVX6Zlt4s7EPnqM1AnxExgGCILG-AOaYk0RjbvnmaUGF0nvJZ6Jv06oZlqKgkjsAi2CNFyUYwHxaNT_3R_7akMohkp2BaiXHuOA_FX90zLFFq/s320/5.jpg" style="margin: 5px;" width="320" /></a></div>
<center>
</center>
<br />
Look at this gorgeous Hexie quilt!<br />
<br />
<center>
<a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/112904041332656714928/AQuiltersJournal05?authkey=Gv1sRgCIby4_z9pPvuswE#5785551544772199650"><img border="0" height="210" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZvJwfj3ipc8XH_wZ52Ve1i0nnveNkz4vsNQuhLZiO0HYPoTNXqve6uEzCS9EM_ByqwV5rK2vOkj0CrK2xhVRQgF0umn151fcx6U6e4-cwEWEKAPqt2tso2ur7iVtyGbPYUfKHpyHEbAJF/s288/6.jpg" style="margin: 5px;" width="281" /></a></center>
<br />
Beautiful fussy cutting and use of stripes. The centre of each hexagon rosette is made up of tiny fussy cut triangles. A piecing triumph.<br />
It is called hexagon revolution, made by Sarah Gill of Cambridge England. She used a lot of recycled fabrics, including socks.<br />
<br />
<br />
<center>
<a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/112904041332656714928/AQuiltersJournal05?authkey=Gv1sRgCIby4_z9pPvuswE#5785551588231920690"><img border="0" height="210" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-oPEse5wgd4en_yaxqLP72NzAi8jwE6eJsObjvnoeewQ_SaFKeOOsd-G0EC_aOAKuvVeiQUnDIVmEtyQFvp63Q3CWQZs4PzsDQXC0O_JWEtJE7kQtwgTtyGdfymHcnHJrqbLje2V43EN7/s288/7.jpg" style="margin: 5px;" width="281" /></a></center>
<br />
What about this gorgeous pineapple quilt? It looks as if recycled shirts could be involved.<br />
The quilt is called 5850 - is this the number of pieces I wonder? It was made by Jilly Meredith from Bridgend as a family gift.<br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Recently I have been playing with red and white scraps left over from one of my classes.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I started by making rectangular string blocks or 'bricks' as they are sometimes known. I then made these into hearts by adding white triangles.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKbNquS-F_jf-2ykIEQzGDRfNwPhbkjpznuw_N5PNwaya5dVaap-Maxx0a_1FTFc0xGjfDx4VvwWRPUvHKF6C_ZGQtNzj6u9qXLAuVzNR6q8wBwqapar7RBdYJgU6Qzim1ukiQBVs9IpCJ/s1600/P1020998.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" pca="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKbNquS-F_jf-2ykIEQzGDRfNwPhbkjpznuw_N5PNwaya5dVaap-Maxx0a_1FTFc0xGjfDx4VvwWRPUvHKF6C_ZGQtNzj6u9qXLAuVzNR6q8wBwqapar7RBdYJgU6Qzim1ukiQBVs9IpCJ/s320/P1020998.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This produced lots of 'bonus triangles' which were just asking to be made into scrappy flying geese. These are 1.5 x 3 inches and will make great borders. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Anthea has asked me to do a workshop on these string hearts at Quilting Antics in Settle. She has given me scraps to work with - here are some of the string bricks I have made</span>.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I know this post is a little late as it is nearly a week since the official Jubilee celebrations. Yesterday I was reading <a href="http://barbarabrackman.blogspot.co.uk/"><span id="goog_16497157"></span>Barbara Brackman's blog</a> <span id="goog_16497158"></span>and she had devoted a post to the Jubilee. She was talking about panels to make Jubilee quilts and I suddenly remembered the Cath Kidston bag I had been given for my birthday. This bag is double sided and made of quite lightweight calico so it could be easily unpicked and the panel used as the centre for a quilt.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
On the subject of Corgis Barbara has designed a superb Jubilee panel that you can find in her special Jubilee post <a href="http://barbarabrackman.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/happy-jubilee.html"> here</a>. If you are not a regular reader of her blog I can highly recommend it, it is one of the most interesting quilting blogs in my opinion. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I also have a Jubilee pin given to me as a birthday gift from my eldest son. This is also from CK and was much admired when I wore it over the weekend.<br />

For those of you in the UK you will know how disappointing the weather was over the Jubilee weekend - in fact our whole summer so far has been a wash out. But we did get the bunting out in the garden. Cilla is posing in her favourite garden chair and in case you are wondering - yes that is the insides of an old washing machine made into a wood burner.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I know that I have not shared much recently - life has been hectic and most quilting has been work related making sample blocks and quilts for classes.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">However this is a little treat I have been meaning to share for a while. All the items in the following photos were made by Maureen, a creative and prolific quilter who attends my Tuesday class and does not have a blog of her own so it is my duty to share her work with you all.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">She started with a red white and blue men's shirt that she bought at the International Quilt Day Event.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">She added some plain white and blue star fabric and made a quilt.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Here is a close up.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEip1qgSxhBb0GBuKsScfl4jFGTQ8C_bV8Kj9GTTvIzEHHH2wH5qAdM8n8xMUErKiIsbPi0EPAT0ZzGm9aN8jZs-WrfVfm7zEzL5bZSxtDiOGFsZRu1dmbBBvylMqqXuhyphenhypheny1-j_U2XMu8gS-/s1600/P1020849.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" rba="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEip1qgSxhBb0GBuKsScfl4jFGTQ8C_bV8Kj9GTTvIzEHHH2wH5qAdM8n8xMUErKiIsbPi0EPAT0ZzGm9aN8jZs-WrfVfm7zEzL5bZSxtDiOGFsZRu1dmbBBvylMqqXuhyphenhypheny1-j_U2XMu8gS-/s320/P1020849.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Then she made a bag - here is one side, note the button holes in the handle!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This is the other side - the label from the shirt has made the flag on the yacht!</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This weekend we have visited Malvern Quilt Show. Geoff came with me and did his best to enjoy himself! He also bought me my birthday gift of EQ7 which I am looking forward to getting to grips with!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We have been to the venue before as it is where Vanfest is held every September, but it was our first time at the quilt show.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">I have really enjoyed our weekend away, we met up with Anthea and Rachel from Quilting Antics for dinner and drinks last night, but I did not feel that the quilt show lived up to my expectations.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">As this is my blog I can express my opinions without fear of hurting anyone's feelings. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">The venue was not as good as Harrogate, my local quilt show. The cafe was tiny and expensive (£1.80 for a small cup of tea!). There was another cafe just outside but that was also quite small.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">The hall was cramped in my opinion and there were not enough competitive quilts. Also lots of quilts I had seen before at other shows and many were not shown to good advantage. There were also not many modern quilts or quilts with the 'wow' factor. I know this is very subjective and many of the quilts were made to very high standards but they were just not speaking to me.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">It made me realise, that even with all its faults you cannot beat the Festival of Quilts and that Harrogate comes a close second.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I did buy some great fabric though, this is the latest from Alexander Henry.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">This will become cushions for Jonathan's next student flat - 16th floor of a high rise near Leeds Uni - the 'penthouse slum' as it is known!</span><br />
<br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">As usual I didn't agree with the judges - good job I'm not one - that would be controversial. I don't think a single first prize went to an amateur quilter which is a shame because it might just put people off entering. </span></div>Janethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03339002160815405018noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8561636170046566235.post-67954875420601814922012-04-29T11:32:00.005+01:002012-04-29T11:33:54.438+01:00Baskets, Leaves and Trees - more Civil War Blocks on point.<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">In my Tuesday class we are making more blocks for a small quilt. The purpose of the class for this term is to learn how to make a quilt with blocks 'on point'.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">My starting point was the </span><a href="http://civilwarquilts.blogspot.co.uk/2011/11/46-apple-tree.html"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Apple Tree</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> Block from Barbara Brackman's Civil War Quilt blog but then I played around with basket, tree and leaf blocks to come up with 13 blocks which play nicely with each other and are meant to be set 'on point'.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOFihos2h_ArGpa4nRFFZN3umFuzoSMYb8yYsoHTSm6CzvUSaVZQ1fx73X8yiZsGdi2cwtiRAClguV_SyXcmY55v7Hvzy-Zdxx5rbNz8NZa7i29ana65DZwWCc_xju9uMTtKn_K3R4tYJq/s1600/P1020873.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" oda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOFihos2h_ArGpa4nRFFZN3umFuzoSMYb8yYsoHTSm6CzvUSaVZQ1fx73X8yiZsGdi2cwtiRAClguV_SyXcmY55v7Hvzy-Zdxx5rbNz8NZa7i29ana65DZwWCc_xju9uMTtKn_K3R4tYJq/s320/P1020873.JPG" width="311" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This is the layout I have decided upon.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh66VAkpr9TQe0cbGVpyHiUjwn8G2F6e_4KbUCD6-8aMja89kf7oNCzRgjJ8_U13KUWMLeP_wAd-n9Aijp3mZEO9v-TvEqza71CMNXJiQ61YcvcPpoE8UWK3PClhqzGNwrHjDr5ohWEDi4B/s1600/P1020871.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" oda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh66VAkpr9TQe0cbGVpyHiUjwn8G2F6e_4KbUCD6-8aMja89kf7oNCzRgjJ8_U13KUWMLeP_wAd-n9Aijp3mZEO9v-TvEqza71CMNXJiQ61YcvcPpoE8UWK3PClhqzGNwrHjDr5ohWEDi4B/s320/P1020871.JPG" width="316" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This is my first layout with the 'heavy' tree blocks on opposite corners but I think that the new layout above looks more balanced. I did think about remaking some of the blocks but that's not in the spirit of patchwork is it? </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO2hLAkWmvyVgu2Mj8AqM2Q95b8H8CS1vlTbxTkU2ZuxPmT73tRc1YYlbqLMm0eNOsKyexhieAn0XILti54koy1w2kpUrZHGPlmMhyphenhypheneBhVPD5TBOsjM5VU1096klP3N9-eHyxTibc34fZn/s1600/P1020847.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" oda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO2hLAkWmvyVgu2Mj8AqM2Q95b8H8CS1vlTbxTkU2ZuxPmT73tRc1YYlbqLMm0eNOsKyexhieAn0XILti54koy1w2kpUrZHGPlmMhyphenhypheneBhVPD5TBOsjM5VU1096klP3N9-eHyxTibc34fZn/s320/P1020847.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Here is the starting point - the </span><a href="http://civilwarquilts.blogspot.co.uk/2011/11/46-apple-tree.html"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Apple Tree Block</span></a><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Next is sashings - although these are not needed in an 'on point' quilt I like them to define my blocks. I did not have enough of my first choice fabric so am now auditioning a couple of fabrics.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The fabric I have used for the blocks is partly Barbara Brackman Civil War Reunion and Woodrow Studios William Morris.</span></div>Janethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03339002160815405018noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8561636170046566235.post-74235166020426043612012-03-31T14:28:00.001+01:002012-03-31T14:28:24.618+01:00Hexagon Pincushions<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">My mini workshop at International Quilting Day was a hexagon pincushion.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Hexagons, made by the English paper piecing method, often have a bad reputation in P&Q circles as they are the point at which most of us started patchwork, many people abandoning it at this point.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">To illustrate this point, most of us have an unfinished hexagon quilt in our UFOs (go on, admit it!)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">However, here in blogland, hexagons have been undergoing something of a revival and many internet groups have been making hexie quilts.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">So, I decided that we should include hexagons in our IQD activities and came up with this little hexagon pincushion design made with only 8 hexagons.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Everyone seemed to really enjoy making it on the day and I know that some of you have secretly been making more!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">I confess to having more than one hexie project in my UFOs and I love making them! The red ones are for a block in a red and white quilt I am making - more on that soon!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">It is now officially the Easter holidays and I have two weeks with no teaching. I am going to try to catch up on gardening, tidying the sewing room and working on some of my UFOs. I am also going to try to blog about some of these because sometimes I am just too busy to keep you up to date with my quilting activities!</span></div>Janethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03339002160815405018noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8561636170046566235.post-29268998150646242892012-03-27T18:41:00.001+01:002012-03-27T18:48:57.492+01:00Civil War Quilts - Show and Tell.<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Cherry brought in another Kentucky Crossroads quilt top - this one is so bright and springlike! I fell in love with it especially as it included some vintage fabrics.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Cherry has also nearly finished this string star quilt - I love the block layout and the secondary patterns it forms.</span></div>Janethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03339002160815405018noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8561636170046566235.post-69276560648295842442012-02-27T06:00:00.000+00:002012-04-08T12:23:53.552+01:00Civil War Quilt Progress<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I have been continuing with my Civil War Quilt.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">This quilt was made from <a href="http://www.civilwarquilts.blogspot.com/">Barbara Brackman's Civil War Quilt</a> blog.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It is now complete with sashings.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSIFGLqBp2JqdbZE6YSYaXS6v70zCpI6kHdsYOgkZ3ZdqIhU071-yz6DA6W_xhKoEhoyH1466CgSz3xnPAFnq-mm4LxjK3q5jrXAErgCUqEzpSSCsgH4-n9U3vy7zyvNSsh2vpur5zo52-/s1600/P1020642-1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" lda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSIFGLqBp2JqdbZE6YSYaXS6v70zCpI6kHdsYOgkZ3ZdqIhU071-yz6DA6W_xhKoEhoyH1466CgSz3xnPAFnq-mm4LxjK3q5jrXAErgCUqEzpSSCsgH4-n9U3vy7zyvNSsh2vpur5zo52-/s320/P1020642-1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I started by adding scrappy sashings which I decided looked too overpowering for an already very scrappy quilt. The only problem is that I had cut all my remaining fabric into 8 and a half x 2 inch strips. Bad idea!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Then, I decided to use the red fabric that I had intended for borders, this looked much better but means I have no border fabric now!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">I added green cornerstones, but then decided I didn't like them either!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Reverse sewing required!</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">So that is how I finally arrived at the red sashing with no cornerstones.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2yk6np8J3P291Rj91PWFw_dEkPxMNXhSXzssz6I2d4pqfFhosqgaEgd0R8tDSg8hi_WPabRQ6925d5RG4sYZcbgzjJfFckH_h35FY6nb4yQXIRknELr79Huc7KZsbwJbKSJVdLNdNgf7N/s1600/P1020568.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" lda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2yk6np8J3P291Rj91PWFw_dEkPxMNXhSXzssz6I2d4pqfFhosqgaEgd0R8tDSg8hi_WPabRQ6925d5RG4sYZcbgzjJfFckH_h35FY6nb4yQXIRknELr79Huc7KZsbwJbKSJVdLNdNgf7N/s320/P1020568.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I am now contemplating borders, this is a very difficult task as I have very little fabric remaining. The plan is to make a scrappy border first, followed by a border of the remaining red fabric which will have to be pieced as I have no long pieces left.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I could buy more fabric as I have found a supplier on the internet but really I like the challenge of working with what I have.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I originally bought 12 half metre pieces with 1 and a half metres for the borders. The finished quilt will be about 70 inches square so I don't think I have done too bad. I will have enough fabric for binding but not backing. I also have 8 orphan blocks and loads of crumbs!</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_P5bigOxOpu1rg82dN1kmq-SoslWQZGzIwjcITqwtZWDFRdkHk0BcgwuyJwShYSQkRWIxygm_gndvY0guS-63ZIlrCjWjOXOkVLQ2EChz87Dcjq4jvwBo4xRB-xuCsgz4QVkCqknPIN9l/s1600/P1020644-1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="303" lda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_P5bigOxOpu1rg82dN1kmq-SoslWQZGzIwjcITqwtZWDFRdkHk0BcgwuyJwShYSQkRWIxygm_gndvY0guS-63ZIlrCjWjOXOkVLQ2EChz87Dcjq4jvwBo4xRB-xuCsgz4QVkCqknPIN9l/s320/P1020644-1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Janice, who is making two single bed sized Civil War quilts, has also just finished this lap quilt made with just one of the blocks, Kentucky Crossroads. Lovely isn't it? It is amazing how many of the blocks could be used on their own to make a great quilt.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQdiQkV6uQNEhsrvVWfXbkc267Gt3O_AxebqRzL-okRz0NmQyZgQ_ShmqWOp3LF_-z0dwmiHam-5XqsKBwarRYSTIYsPM-OPM8spThrO4Di4PKXrtRrQiJbekxJO8hNBu6xaqBMnAlh9Ov/s1600/P1020645-1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" lda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQdiQkV6uQNEhsrvVWfXbkc267Gt3O_AxebqRzL-okRz0NmQyZgQ_ShmqWOp3LF_-z0dwmiHam-5XqsKBwarRYSTIYsPM-OPM8spThrO4Di4PKXrtRrQiJbekxJO8hNBu6xaqBMnAlh9Ov/s320/P1020645-1.JPG" width="280" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Finally, these are some of Kath's blocks. She has made them with what she calls 'ugly fabric'!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">As you can see the quilt be will far from ugly.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana;">Between now and Easter we will all be trying to get our Civil War Quilts finished. By my reckoning there should be at least 25 between us, we could have our own quilt show!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I had run out of the white on white background fabric and any other white fabric I put next to it just made it look too cream in colour. Actually I organised it for my embroidery/patchwork group! We have a lovely big venue at the church where we meet so Philippa is able to teach 20 ladies in one class. This is the fourth year that Philippa has taught for our group and this years technique was trapunto. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Before you ask, last year it was curved piecing, and that is still a UFO so I am hoping to do better this year.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I have decided to share my progress and hopefully this workshop sample will turn into a small quilt.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNwCTvBCTw6_WpawLw80Td_iKcwCE6SNYiGhhmnw_BvC86zegyVNSN4WvZiC4oFMOHOzfDpQ7W30TA0R47uRfC8isPai_9VPyX6f84Y64p9gjBrbSFZeWfqWJM2TT9EL4XCvAyHB8ntFYP/s1600/P1020616.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" sda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNwCTvBCTw6_WpawLw80Td_iKcwCE6SNYiGhhmnw_BvC86zegyVNSN4WvZiC4oFMOHOzfDpQ7W30TA0R47uRfC8isPai_9VPyX6f84Y64p9gjBrbSFZeWfqWJM2TT9EL4XCvAyHB8ntFYP/s320/P1020616.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The first photo shows my progress of as last night. This is the first stage completed but I will guide you through the process in a series of photos</span>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZxBkAX_bHyvPuHC8yYUdvjL17jYyhyuKgYrRIA_gFQfGr7HbN0MEJBgT-fqoE0yKVhhBYiquzlBiU_lJgn9MwC0MEGhzu-g3ertKup0jkHKInmxCxlYf58Dn-nHYw7RnO_U8Df3SRxUrp/s1600/P1020613.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="290" sda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZxBkAX_bHyvPuHC8yYUdvjL17jYyhyuKgYrRIA_gFQfGr7HbN0MEJBgT-fqoE0yKVhhBYiquzlBiU_lJgn9MwC0MEGhzu-g3ertKup0jkHKInmxCxlYf58Dn-nHYw7RnO_U8Df3SRxUrp/s320/P1020613.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">First we drew our design (Philippa's design actually!) onto fabric.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihSWArMqtl8ctBrjKx2VUSiZ3rdHkGZBSS3jstEXh0O7xksTs0NCZ4gfCL8-hmGS5GC7Dizdo_nXcAl06MMfRgioW22myaIZjG8J5uAlYWN5IxeoND3Bks5W83CCXi2pAYmPDZL0jYnKrB/s1600/P1020614.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" sda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihSWArMqtl8ctBrjKx2VUSiZ3rdHkGZBSS3jstEXh0O7xksTs0NCZ4gfCL8-hmGS5GC7Dizdo_nXcAl06MMfRgioW22myaIZjG8J5uAlYWN5IxeoND3Bks5W83CCXi2pAYmPDZL0jYnKrB/s320/P1020614.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Then we added a double layer of 80/20 wadding behind the design and stitched just inside the motifs using water soluble thread. This was done using Free Motion Quilting so the line is a bit wobbly - the stitches are supposed to be as long as possible so they are easier to remove, mine vary quite a lot!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8E95DoV19vXQ4hd0BnfKlTxluengBnLq_lewgLDFLYwWPb1OpqXggLhgg_KDDEk5caNJqGKOAJhmKAHT0gzwNpfLLIRYLWFslTk72VuJj-q4oBdl3WY_LFkE6uSKqum_lhzdB86ZHZ_B2/s1600/P1020615.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" sda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8E95DoV19vXQ4hd0BnfKlTxluengBnLq_lewgLDFLYwWPb1OpqXggLhgg_KDDEk5caNJqGKOAJhmKAHT0gzwNpfLLIRYLWFslTk72VuJj-q4oBdl3WY_LFkE6uSKqum_lhzdB86ZHZ_B2/s320/P1020615.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Then you start to cut away the wadding just leaving the areas that you want to have the trapunto effect.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This is a fiddly process but actually quite enjoyable in a theraputic sort of way!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDLZJVE49P2eZ8tvUSKuBZZSCTqD9SiLtJK3hVcNaRfBMJNYBl7BiKBOPATocJz8TACjKm3Uo2PNcvY3E6G1F2dPvERgdSO_BTR8sMw0ohC1HeXPUn82CqmKCftY5stDcRcUDPZnGYpfcz/s1600/P1020608.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" sda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDLZJVE49P2eZ8tvUSKuBZZSCTqD9SiLtJK3hVcNaRfBMJNYBl7BiKBOPATocJz8TACjKm3Uo2PNcvY3E6G1F2dPvERgdSO_BTR8sMw0ohC1HeXPUn82CqmKCftY5stDcRcUDPZnGYpfcz/s320/P1020608.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">This then leaves this pattern of wadding shapes on the back that remind me so much of flock wallpaper!</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It is half term this week and I have no classes so I hope it is not too long before I can report on the next stage of this small quilt. I have loads of projects that need borders, basting or quilting but really I just wanted to piece. 'Mindless piecing' I call it, just feeding sections through the machine one after another, getting lost in the process and taking your mind off issues going on in your life.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">I saw an article on the <a href="http://www.how-to-quilt.com/articles/1130-log-cabin-trees.php">internet</a> about these little trees and decided to give them a go. Here is the first one I made.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg181p-dJI-8z-EfRQg-cdFpyq5DgurBKE_mjsHbJZ0OnoxUcCaKf8MC6Pt2ysUgGWjUbqTXYRUO9LM00KKslsc9WuClK8iZLX3tohUmkfGdwSxAkYJaqcbqh5AAetZmaVhkOSjiPJL-u0T/s1600/P1020576.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" sda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg181p-dJI-8z-EfRQg-cdFpyq5DgurBKE_mjsHbJZ0OnoxUcCaKf8MC6Pt2ysUgGWjUbqTXYRUO9LM00KKslsc9WuClK8iZLX3tohUmkfGdwSxAkYJaqcbqh5AAetZmaVhkOSjiPJL-u0T/s320/P1020576.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It all started when I remembered these little bags of scraps I had bought at the Festival of Quilts last year. Just how much fun can you have with a £1.40 bag of fabric? </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTfXid4P06FLRJuvp-msXVcBLEt0ebtSCOlz9hGYK-jpvMGOacwLSjODUysdsQ0CexfhKhpj0dHg-cxNMw8kqTj-MZt8eY_biuL8e2fr3xA4IkLbvYhjkA4mmQlMhmsiTqQO-JTU_rxr0h/s1600/P1020574.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" sda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTfXid4P06FLRJuvp-msXVcBLEt0ebtSCOlz9hGYK-jpvMGOacwLSjODUysdsQ0CexfhKhpj0dHg-cxNMw8kqTj-MZt8eY_biuL8e2fr3xA4IkLbvYhjkA4mmQlMhmsiTqQO-JTU_rxr0h/s320/P1020574.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Well, you can make these cute little log cabins!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-uypujCxHn2oWrh_Uzoek3pEmil7rE18v7tmFt1dkMgfSy7UZjap4iJT_OOChZnhCk15HMk7hqg-dI6GJO6Fb9m-5GR2LhIJoP0-bVc1dUASVrA0L401oy8Wp6zr3G8CwC1Glf-tLFIsy/s1600/P1020575.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="317" sda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-uypujCxHn2oWrh_Uzoek3pEmil7rE18v7tmFt1dkMgfSy7UZjap4iJT_OOChZnhCk15HMk7hqg-dI6GJO6Fb9m-5GR2LhIJoP0-bVc1dUASVrA0L401oy8Wp6zr3G8CwC1Glf-tLFIsy/s320/P1020575.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">But first I decided to make a batch of trees. I started with some dark brown scraps which were not in the bag and some white background squares.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5-oG71BogKq48ykesyiDw_r2q5MsLugFqFZtWR9OAlQgUSjT-6IV5C8Pyti2PDu9nL9tY4-hSIdbl4NnqeL8bgx3E3bTUwOHAKN3xEnuYysU-PQ172yLUu3hpiJnkKGF6gB7PSFDT1cNM/s1600/P1020577.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" sda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5-oG71BogKq48ykesyiDw_r2q5MsLugFqFZtWR9OAlQgUSjT-6IV5C8Pyti2PDu9nL9tY4-hSIdbl4NnqeL8bgx3E3bTUwOHAKN3xEnuYysU-PQ172yLUu3hpiJnkKGF6gB7PSFDT1cNM/s320/P1020577.JPG" width="320" /></a></div> <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I pieced these to make little trunk sections. <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Now all I need to do is add a round of background fabric and join them together....</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Or shall I make some more log cabins out of the remains of the bag?</span><br />

You may be aware that 2011 was the 150th Anniversary of the start of the American Civil War.</div>
<br />
<br />
In my Tuesday class we have been making a Civil War Quilt. We have been making blocks from Barbara Brackman's Civil War Blog Each week I have taken 2 blocks and written instructions on how to make them. By February 7th we will have made 38 of the 53 on the blog. I have decided to use 36 of the blocks for my quilt. Each block will finish at 8 inches square.<br />
<br />
The fabric is Portobello Market by 3 Sisters for Moda<br />

This is the layout I have chosen - although it may change<br />

My design wall is a piece of thick cheap wadding from Dunelm Mill which has been tacked to the wall. Gizmo likes to have a snooze whilst contemplating the layout of the blocks!<br />

.<br />
Here are 4 New England blocks made by some of my students a few weeks ago. I took the photo to illustrate how different a block can look depending on the fabric choices.<br />
<br />
<br />
I am now at the stage of sashings. On Saturday I cut 84 sashing strips out of the fabric I had left, to make scrappy sashings. On Sunday I decided I didn't like it so I cut out some more strips out of a red fabric I had bought for the borders. I stitched this with green cornerstones. This morning I have decided that I don't like the cornerstones, I think the sashing will look better without them! More reverse sewing today! I always change my mind a few times as I am making a quilt!<br />
